Choosing the Perfect Synthetic Turf for Your Foot Traffic

February 17, 2023

Artificial grass is installed everywhere, from backyards to professional sports centers. However, not all turf is created equally, and it can be challenging to know which kind is right for a certain project.

To help you narrow down your choices, we’ve created a beginner’s guide to choosing the right kind of artificial turf based on foot traffic.

Different Kinds of Artificial Turf Backing

Your artificial turf’s backing is important. The material it’s made of will make or break your turf’s ability to withstand heavy foot traffic.

There are two materials most commonly used in artificial grass backing: latex and polyurethane. The former is more likely to crumble and deteriorate, while polyurethane holds up well under all conditions. Its increased durability makes polyurethane the superior material for artificial turf backing.

Short vs. Long Pile Heights

Pile height is a term used to describe the length of your synthetic turf’s blades.

Longer pile heights look more lush and natural but are more prone to matting. This makes it well-suited to residential or commercial landscapes that don’t see high levels of foot traffic.

Shorter pile heights are great for high-use areas like sports fields, fitness centers and playscapes. They tend to look less natural but are highly durable and easy to maintain.

Choosing the Right Infill

Infill is the loose material placed between the blades of your artificial turf. Infill ensures proper drainage, keeps your blades upright and even plays a role in eliminating odors.

Properly distributed, high-quality infill will ensure your artificial grass looks great and functions properly.

Your artificial grass installation contractor will help you decide on an appropriate infill based on how your turf will be used. Will it be used heavily as a sports field or more casually in a residential setting? Will children or pets play on your lawn? All these factors will play a role in selecting the proper infill for the job.
