Four Key Terms You’ll Need to Know When Buying Artificial Turf Wholesale

February 21, 2023

If you’re new to artificial turf installation, the terminology can be overwhelming and confusing. Synthetic turf is a unique material with its own set of characteristics that can sound like a whole new language at first.

While the terms surrounding artificial turf may be new to you, they aren’t complicated. In fact, much of what goes into picking out a suitable synthetic turf style can be broken down into these four key terms.

Short vs. Long Pile Height

Like carpeting, different artificial turf styles have different pile heights. This term refers to the length of the turf’s fibers, which impacts what applications a synthetic turf variety is best suited for.

Shorter pile heights are more durable and less prone to matting, making them better for high-traffic areas like fitness centers or sports fields. Shorter blades look a bit less realistic than longer varieties.

Longer pile heights have a lush, natural appearance that works best in residential, low-traffic areas. Their length makes them more prone to matting, which isn’t ideal for high-use areas.

Artificial Turf Face Weight

The face weight of an artificial turf variety refers to its total weight minus the backing and infill. Face weight is an excellent way to determine quality and fiber density and generally ranges from 30 to 90 ounces per square yard. Typically, a higher face weight will result in a more durable, lush-looking installation.

Polyurethane Backing Material

Artificial turf backing is most commonly made from two materials: latex and polyurethane. Polyurethane backings are far more durable, lighter and easier to install.

The quality of your lawn’s backing material is crucial, as it determines how well your artificial grass will hold up under regular use. Choosing a style with polyurethane backing will help you get the longest useful life out of your investment in artificial turf.

Turf Bind

Turf bind refers to how well the synthetic blades are attached to the backing material. Artificial grass has to hold up to a lot – heavy foot traffic, pet use, harsh weather – and good turf binding is crucial to ensure adequate durability.
