Don’t Start Your Artificial Turf Installation Without These Important Install Tools

July 31, 2023

Synthetic grass is one of the most popular landscaping solutions on the market today thanks to its low maintenance requirements, evergreen appearance, and long-term cost savings. When you invest in artificial turf, you’re investing in a home improvement that should last you for years or even decades to come.

However, in order to make the most of that investment and ensure your project is top-quality, it’s important to use the highest-quality turf products and utilize appropriate installation tools to complete the job to the highest standard. If you’re planning to install turf grass for yourself or a client, make sure you have these five important installation tools to properly install high-quality artificial turf landscaping.

Weed Barrier

One of the biggest benefits of artificial grass is that it discourages weed growth. Due to the installation methods and tight woven backing, it’s usually all but impossible for weeds to grow through your turf grass. However, sometimes you may still see some pesky weeds pop up along turf seams or edges. To help mitigate this risk, it’s important to lay down a weed barrier during the synthetic grass installation process.

Weed barriers are installed beneath your synthetic turf product. They’re strong enough to prevent weeds from taking root, yet they’re porous enough to allow all water and liquid nutrients through to properly drain. They also act as an additional stabilizer and soil separator for your synthetic grass lawn. Weeds are incredibly sneaky, but a properly installed weed barrier will help almost entirely eliminate any weeds that may pop up.

Stakes

When installing multiple rolls of turf, the synthetic grass will need to be secured both to the ground underneath and to each other. This is where artificial turf stakes come in. Stakes, or spikes, are essential for proper synthetic grass installation. If the grass is not secured properly, it the edges can lift and cause premature wear and tear.

To properly stake your artificial turf landscape, drive one spike into the ground every few inches for the entire length of any interior seams. They should be driven at least four to six inches into the ground to ensure proper security.

Landscaping Staples

Another method for adhering your artificial grass rolls is stapling. Synthetic turf staples are easy to apply and effectively secure your turf rolls both to the ground and to each other. To properly staple your turf grass, apply one staple every one to two feet around the perimeter of the installation site. These staples should be four to six inches in length, just like synthetic turf stakes, spikes, or nails should be.

Seam Tape

If you want a seamless blend between two artificial grass rolls, seam tape is the way to go. Seam tape and glue help adhere two turf rolls to each other without the risk of protruding nails or stakes.

To use seam tape, make sure you have two good turf edges to seam together. After lining up the seams and securing them temporarily with nails, place the seam tape on the ground with the sticky side up, securing it every so often if necessary to keep it lined up. Once the full length of tape has been laid out, set the grass in place and apply weight along the seam to ensure the turf binds with the tape.

Infill

Used to fill the spaces between the blades of turf, infill consists of granular materials such as silica sand, rubber, or brands like Envirofill with their own proprietary design. Infill adds ballast, resilience, and a natural feel that lets your synthetic grass withstand daily traffic and activity.

Although all infill provides the same basic functions in supporting and cushioning your turf, it’s important to choose which infill product is right for your installation’s unique needs. Some infill are antimicrobial, some are designed for use on pet-friendly turf, and some can help keep your turf surface cooler. Each infill material and brand has distinct pros and cons, so reach out to your synthetic turf distributor for assistance in choosing the right infill for your needs.
